CARNIVAL OF FANO
THE SWEETEST IN ITALY

1347 The Carnival of Fano is one of the oldest in Italy. Its birth is commonly dated back to 1347, the date of the first known document in which the expenses incurred by the Municipality for the carnival celebrations are described.

1765 The first recording of the “jet” of sweets, a peculiarity of the Fano Carnival, dates back to this date. In a song, published in 1765 from the prints of Andrea Donati Episcopal Printer, the following verse appears: “[…] And de Confetti scattered For me the White Way […]”. Over time, the casting has been enriched in quantity and quality.

1872 A manifesto dated 1872 informs citizens of the constitution of the “Society of Fortune”, ancestor of today’s Carnival Authority, and of the program of “carnival entertainment” held in the same year. The first president to lead the Society was Count Oddo Bracci.

1923 “Musica Arabita” (Angry Music) is born, a bizarre and eccentric musical group that loves to use bizarre instruments, such as bins, bottles, jugs, coffee pots, umbrellas, garbage cans, clogs, and much more. The quintessence of the group was Enzo Berardi, a master who dedicated all his extraordinary, overflowing energy to the Arabita, making it a distinctive trait of his personality. He had the great merit of supporting the group with versatility and quality and of obtaining the right recognition. A histrion who in tailcoat and top hat, with his white glove and four fingers towards the sky and with the beat-up stick, managed to make people smile with carefree even in postwar weather and climate.

1947 In August, the first “Corso dei Fiori” took place between via Cavour, via Filzi and the Lungomare, a summer edition of the Carnival characterized by allegorical floats covered with colorful flowers.

1951 It is a historic date for the Fano Carnival. The masked street, hosted up to this date in the small Corso Matteotti, is moved to the wide Viale Gramsci. Decision that allows the master-tankmen to try their hand at more daring and articulated allegorical constructions. It is the year that also sees the birth of the typical Carnival mask, El Vulon, born from the inspiration of Rino Fucci.

1954 The sheds of the Carnival were erected in Avenue XII September, close to the Medieval Walls, on municipal land granted for use by the Autonomous Tourist Board. This choice will allow to develop a larger dimension of the papier-mâché works. The sheds will reset up until 2004, when the municipal administration of Fano decides to build the modern carnival sites in viale Piceno.
